Irish Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) / Saorview
The Irish Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) service is currently undergoing test transmissions from a number of sites around the country. Analogue TV switch off in Ireland is scheduled for 2012, with Free To Air DTT available to 90% of the population by 31 October 2010.
Irish DTT has been named "Saorview".
DTT provides very high audio and video quality, digital teletext, an electronic program guide and has interactive service capabilities. DTT also allows for multiple channels to be broadcast on a single frequency, compared to analogue which has one channel per frequency.
RTÉ One, RTÉ Two, TV3 and TG4 will be Free To Air (FTA) on Irish DTT. An Irish Film Channel and an Oireachtas Channel, which will also be FTA, are set to be established following the Broadcasting Act 2009.
Irish DTT uses MPEG4 (H.264) video encoding, over DVB-T. This means that your receiver must be MPEG4 capable for it to decode the DTT transmission and display it on screen. Information on compatible TVs and set top boxes along with more details of the capabilities of DTT can be found in the DTT Information section.
If you are currently receiving the test transmissions you can submit a reception report detailing your location and the equipment you are using to receive and decode the broadcasts. Reports can be submitted here. You need to create a username before you can submit a reception report
